Friends shares rise on hopes for rival bid

The market is braced for a rival bid for Friends Provident, with hopes of an interloper breaking up its merger talks with Resolution Life driving Friends’ shares up almost 8 per cent.

Shares in Friends, which on Monday confirmed it was in discussions with Resolution, rose 14.6p to 201p. Shares in Resolution rose 7p to 636p.
