UN downgrades Colombia peace mission amid tensions with government

The United Nations yesterday said its mission to find a solution to Colombia's internal armed conflict had entered a "low-key" phase, effectively signalling the withdrawal of an effort increasingly at odds with the Colombian government.

Colombia has experimented with several, but ultimately failed, attempts at peace negotiations aimed at ending a ferocious 40-year-old insurgency by guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc).
