Investment funds that aggressively push for change at companies substantially outperform stock market indices, according to the first independent study ofshareholder activism, writes Kate Burgess.

The research, published today by the European Corporate Governance Institute, analysed returns over six years from the Hermes UK Focus Fund, the only focused activist fund set up by a UK investment institution.
