Sarkozy in uphill battle over living standards

Sylvette Lamy, a cashier at Carrefour’s La Beaujoire hypermarket in Nantes, is fed up with high prices. She cites the cost of butter, milk and bread as having surged well ahead of her pay.

“Spending power has diminished for a lot of people,” she said. “The government could do more to help.”
