Copper soars to record above $8,000 a tonne

Copper and zinc prices reached new records on Wednesday amid renewed supply concerns after Grupo Mexico said it would close its San Martin copper, silver and zinc mines because of prolonged strike action.

The expected output loss is not large but follows a litany of production shortfalls reported by other miners. Antofagasta said it expected output from one of its key mines in Chile to decline 4.4 per cent this year, fuelling supply concerns.
