Gannett profits fall 53% but beat expectations

Gannett, publisher of USA Today, reported a 53 per cent decline in third-quarter net profit, but exceeded its own expectations on improved advertising spending trends and steep cost cuts.

Shares rose 2.5 per cent before the bell.
