Bush names top legal aide as attorney-general

Alberto Gonzales, the White House legal counsel who has been President George W. Bush's closest legal adviser for more than a decade, was nominated next US attorney-general on Wednesday.

The appointment quickly fills the hole left on Tuesday night when John Ashcroft resigned the post, becoming the first member of the cabinet to depart since Mr Bush's re-election.
