Battle is on to keep the tills ringing

British consumers may no longer be shopping until they drop, but they are continuing to splash the cash far more than retailers hoped when the nation lurched into recession.

Retail-spend-graphic Interim results and other trading updates from retailers over the next few weeks is expected to show that spending is holding up much better than the sector expected at the beginning of this year when, after a dismal Christmas characterised by heavy discounting, the outlook appeared bleak.
