Gordon Brown will on Wednesday unveil a significant increase in the value of research and development tax credits for British companies, seeking further to equip the country for the challenges of globalisation.
In a move that will entrench dividing lines with the Conservatives on economic policy, the chancellor is expected to use Wednesday's Budget to announce a significant increase in the £1.8bn R&D tax credit scheme for small and large companies.
