Prague criticises Merkel on handling of 50th anniversary

Hopes that the European Union's 50th birthday party on Sunday would pass off harmoniously were thrown into doubt yesterday, after the Czech Republic attacked the way Angela Merkel, German chancellor, has handled its preparation.

Prague has warned the EU's German presidency that Václav Klaus, the eurosceptic Czech president, will not decide whether to endorse a 50th anniversary "Berlin declaration" until Saturday night.
