Brazil: Switch-off sparks debate on how to secure future supplies

Brazil is blessed with cheap, renewable electricity. About 85 per cent of its generating capacity is in the form of hydroelectric power. With abundant rainfall for much of the year, Brazilians are used to taking electricity for granted.

So it came as a severe shock when the country was hit by electricity rationing in 2001 and 2002, the combined result of unusually low rainfall, complacency and bad management.
