Cash-for-clunkers runs out of road

A display at a Michigan dealershipReutersAcross the US this weekend, dealers were enjoying the last hurrah of the government’s car scrappage programme – the popular $3bn cash-for-clunkers scheme.

The Keith Pierson Toyota dealership in Jacksonville, Florida has completed 70 rebate deals since the scheme to funnel money to car buyers started less than a month ago. “We’ve had quite an increase,” says Jonathan Powell, the dealership’s business development manager.
