GM and Ford announce further cuts

General Motors and Ford, north America's two biggest carmakers, have announced further production cuts as they struggle to bring down swollen inventories in the face of sliding sales and market shares.

The announcements were made as GM revealed it was restructuring its design and engineering operations to cut costs. The company is struggling to keep its automotive business profitable and has delayed mid-decade profit targets until 2007.
