Malaysia PM calls snap election

Malaysia’s Election Commission said on Thursday that a general election would be held on March 8, as Abdullah Badawi goes to the polls early in an effort to renew public support for his faltering reform programme

Although his National Front coalition government is expected to win the election, continuing its unbroken run in office since independence in 1957, a large decline in support could weaken Mr Abdullah’s authority within the United Malays National Organisation, the dominant party.
