Sportech is lining up a bid for the pool betting business of the Tote, the state-owned company, and has made “substantial progress” in plans to break into the Asian market.

The football pools operator, which has a virtual monopoly on the gaming business after its acquisition in December of Vernons, has told ministers of its interest after they announced the sale of the Tote, valued last year at £400m, on the open market.
