Sector revamp needed to aid fund selection

Broad fund sector classifications are making it increasingly difficult for investors to compare the performance of equity funds on a like-for-like basis.

The Investment Management Association (IMA) classifies UK unit trusts and open-ended investment companies (Oeics) into nearly 30 sectors, split by asset class and region. This is meant to help investors sift through the 4,000 or so onshore funds available and compare similar funds.
