Recovery hopes help FTSE 100 to fresh highs

Mining stocks took the FTSE 100 to fresh highs for 2009 on Wednesday, after stronger output growth at Rio Tinto helped energise the heavily-weighted mining sector.

The mood was also lifted by news of a significantly slower rise in the UK’s unemployment rate, reinvigorating hopes that the worst of the recession may be over.
