Putin’s party sweeps to election victory

President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party on Sunday night swept parliamentary elections, partial results showed. Opposition opposition parties condemned the poll as the most heavily manipulated since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The strong showing is expected to provide a platform for Mr Putin – who headed the United Russia ticket – to continue as Russia’s most influential politician even after he steps down as president next year.
