Reed Elsevier chief quits amid claim role was 'not right for him'

Ian Smith, chief executive of Reed Elsevier, yesterday parted company with the Anglo-Dutch group after less than nine months in the role, as the publisher issued a trading update highlighting tough market conditions.

Reed said the surprise departure was by mutual agreement and that Erik Engstrom, chief executive of Elsevier, the group's Dutch arm, had been appointed chief executive with immediate effect.
