Recovering from a dangerous addiction is never easy. That makes it all the more tempting to welcome even tentative signs of progress.

Take the US trade deficit, which continues to look pretty ugly by any measure, except for consensus expectations. Based on the first five months, the US is well on track towards its largest nominal trade imbalance yet for the full year – mirroring the fact that it remains chronically short of domestic savings.
