Iran reformists’ hopes rise as presidential race nears

When Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani announced last month he would stand in Iran’s presidential election, many analysts and most Iranians assumed he would win easily.

But as campaigning officially ended on Thursday ahead of poll, Mr Rafsanjani’s chances of securing the 50 per cent vote needed for first-round victory had been dented in a lively campaign.
