Republicans begin the soul-searching

Republicans began a painful inquest into their sweeping election defeat on Wednesday as the party prepared for life without control of any arm of federal government for the first time in 14 years.

Leaders called for a period of self-examination after John McCain lost the White House to Barack Obama and the Democrats strengthened their majorities in both chambers of Congress.
