An inquiry into how medicines are distributed was launched by the Office of Fair Trading yesterday after it received complaints about an exclusive deal struck between Pfizer, the drugs group, and UniChem, the wholesaling division of Alliance Boots.

The "market study", due to be completed by the end of the year, will examine the effects of the new arrangement on competition, the National Health Service and patients.
