Brown says No to total takeover of the banks

Gordon Brown in effect ruled out the wholesale nationalisation of the banks yesterday as the government took formal control of the Royal Bank of Scotland, with a 57.9 per cent shareholding.

Speculation that the government could intervene to nationalise the banks to force them to restart lending to the credit-starved mortgage and small business sectors was fuelled by Mervyn King, Bank of England governor, earlier this week.
