Banking: Consumers keep on borrowing

In the Tinodi utca branch of OTP Bank in Budapest’s ninth district, there is little sign that customers are feeling the squeeze from austerity measures and flagging growth.

Despite forecasts of 2 per cent growth for this year and taxes and other deductions that leave earners with just 40 per cent of their pay, the branch is busy with a healthy crowd of irritable customers waiting to be served.
