Boys circle the graffitied curves of a skate park outside the city of Sunderland. In the background is Herrington Country Park, once the site of one of the region’s many coal mines. This is one of a series of photos (see slideshow below) that Simon Roberts was commissioned to take as part of “The Social: encountering photography”, a month-long celebration of photographic work in northeast England. “Many of Sunderland’s areas of heavy industry have since been turned over to heritage and leisure usages,” says Roberts. “I wanted to capture these contemporary sites of leisure that have been reinvented but are still loaded with layers of memory and identity.” Images from “The Social” are at locations across the northeast, including libraries and station platforms, until November 16.
