Victor Mallet

Victor Mallet is the Asia editor of the Financial Times, based in Hong Kong. In his previous role, he was chief Asia correspondent writing editorials, columns and feature articles on a range of subjects concerning the Asia-Pacific, including security, politics, economics and business. In 2005 and 2006, he won the Society of Publishers in Asia award for opinion writing.

His career at the FT spans 20 years and a variety of overseas roles, including Paris correspondent from 2001 to 2003, Southern Africa correspondent from 1998 to 2001 and South-East Asia correspondent from 1992 to 1994. Victor also has been Deputy Features editor and Middle East correspondent, roles based in London.

Before joining the Financial Times, Victor was a correspondent for Reuters in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Paris.

He is the author of The Trouble with Tigers: the Rise and Fall of South-East Asia, which was published in 1999.

Born on May 14, 1960, he went to school in England and earned a degree in English language and literature from Oxford University. He is married, with two children.


Victor Mallet doubles as the FT’s sailing and yachting commentator, and his columns appear regularly in the Weekend FT.

He began sailing in dinghies with his parents on the Nile river in the Sudanese capital Khartoum at the age of 10. Since then, he has sailed on everything from luxurious superyachts in the Mediterranean to an open fishing boat with old sacking for a sail on a lake in Ghana. Victor writes about all aspects of sailing, including cruising, racing, the history of sail and how new technology is changing the sport.
