'Robin' by Anastasia Voutyropoulou

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ annual Big Garden Birdwatch takes place next weekend across the UK. Last year almost 600,000 people took part in the event, the largest of its kind in the world, which asks people to count the species of birds in their gardens.

The above photograph, taken in 2007 by Anastasia Voutyropoulou, shows a robin, a species that in the survey’s 35-year history has declined by 35 per cent. In 2013 8.2m birds were counted and this year the RSPB is asking bird watchers to record sightings with a live birdcounter app.

Voutyropoulou, a Greek-born photographer, trained at the Royal College of Art in London and has exhibited in the UK and in Greece.
