Questions can be answered by a democratic process

Sir, Janan Ganesh (“Gifted amateurism is no foundation for a united kingdom”, Comment, September 16) is quite wrong to say that more devolution to Scotland would open “vast and nearly unanswerable questions” about the governance of the UK.
Such questions are perfectly answerable by a democratic – if necessarily novel – process that is rooted in the broad interest in constitutional reform now plainly evident, not just in Scotland, but throughout the UK.
A generation ago some of us signed Charter 88 to prompt such a democratic debate on a new constitutional settlement. That debate was never properly finished. It needs to be.
