Two business schools in the UK’s industrial heartland are to establish a research centre to boost enterprise.

Warwick Business School, near Coventry, and Aston Business School, in Birmingham, have been given £2.9m by the combined forces of the government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the British Bankers Association, the Economic and Social Research Council and the Technology Strategy Board, to set up the Enterprise Research Centre.

The bid was headed up by Warwick professor Stephen Roper, who is an expert on medium-sized businesses, and Aston Business School’s Mark Hart. “Our key objective is to provide policy-makers and SME managers with the evidence they need to make good decisions for growth,” says Prof Roper. The centre will investigate topics such as “business ambition, leadership and management, finance, innovation, productivity and diversity,” he says.

A consortium of four other universities, Birmingham and De Montfort, both in the Midlands, Strathclyde in Scotland, and Imperial College in London, will also participate in the research.
