The mysterious glow of the night is celebrated by the American photographer Judy Gelles in her “Trailer Park” series (2004). The image is one of nine in the project, showing mobile homes at night in a retirement community in Melbourne Beach, Florida. Gelles used colour negative film and a five-minute exposure time, giving the effect of a cold blue light coming from the home and the car next to it.
The photograph is currently on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in its exhibition (see slideshow below) Night in Day, a celebration of the dark as captured through the museum’s collection of photographic nocturnes, taken over the past century.
‘Night in Day’ is on display at Lacma until August 24, lacma.org
