Financial Times wins six awards at the SOPA awards for editorial excellence

Hong Kong, 12 June 2009: Last night, the Financial Times won six awards at the 2009 Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Awards for Editorial Excellence presentation dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Hong Kong.

The Financial Times received five top prizes, including the Journalist of the Year award won by Mumbai correspondent Joe Leahy. The judges commended his series of articles on India for being able to “help readers understand the conflicts, issues and human protagonists with details and insights that illuminate and linger.”

The Financial times also won first prizes for newspaper design, digital journalism and scoop of the year. FTChinese.com, the newspaper’s Chinese language website, won first prize in the feature writing category for an article on thirty years of reforms in China.

The runner-up prize was in the special section or special issue category for the FT’s China report on the challenges and opportunities facing the world’s new superpower.

The SOPA Awards were established in 1999 to honour high standards of journalism and the best work in Asia and this year, 547 entries competed in 17 categories.
