Who’s Top Boy? Is it Dushane (Ashley Walters), smooth, ruthless and determined to corner the drug trade on his east London estate? Or is it schoolboy Ra’Nell (Malcolm Kamulete), left to fend for himself when his depressed mum is sectioned, and trying to do the right thing in spite of Dushane?

This gripping four-parter, first aired on Channel 4, captures the edgy allure and collateral damage of gangster life, and scriptwriter Ronan Bennett skirts miserablism with sharp characterisation and humour. A second series is due next month; if it maintains this form, it’ll be a must-see.
