Deal of the Week - Online cashback guarantee

What’s the deal?

A shopping website that guarantees to pay cash rebates on purchases from up to 1,000 online retailers.

Fatcheese.co.uk is one of a number of cashback sites offering rebates worth up to hundreds of pounds on transactions, based on commission received from featured retailers.

Cashback payers on the new site include Tesco.com (up to 3 per cent) and Expedia.com (up to 6 per cent), insurers such as More Than (up to £60), and energy companies such as Scottish Power (up to £110).

However, should retailers fail to pay users, Fatcheese guarantees to honour the cashbacks for proven transactions via its site. The payments will be made about 10 weeks after a purchase. The site keeps the first £5 earned by users each year.

Is this good?

Delayed and unpaid rebates can be problems for cashback site users and disputes are common. Some customers have to wait a year or more to receive their rebates, and payouts may not come through at all or at a lower rate.

Fatcheese guarantees to pay out on proven transactions – a unique promise in the sector – even if they are not properly tracked to the site or are rejected by the online merchant.

What’s the catch?

Fatcheese’s cashbacks may not be the highest, and the site keeps the first £5 a year of a user’s earnings.

There are some exclusions to the guarantee, including where a comparison service has been used before the cashback site – in which case the former may earn the rebate. Rivals also question how sustainable the guarantee will prove to be, especially if the site has a lot of claims.

What’s the alternative?

Other cashback sites say they chase up cashback payments with merchants on behalf of their users. Clearing a computer’s “cookies” – records of visited websites – may also help transactions to be verified.
