The urbane clarity of Art Farmer’s trumpet and Benny Golson’s rococo tenor sax were a frequently recorded perfect match in the first flush of 50s modern jazz.
Both spun seamless melodies, swung with finesse and were standout composer/arrangers – the bluesy “Mox Nix” kick-starts this standards-heavy programme.
A young Bill Evans adds his featherlight pianist’s touch and the album won five stars from trade magazine Downbeat when first issued in 1958 – though add-ons don’t quite match. Like others in this series of critics-picks reissues, the album stands up well.
