Orrin Evans: ‘ ... It Was Beauty’

The leader blends contemporary concerns with a rich seam of historical references

Orrin Evans’ beautifully nuanced piano trio romps along at lightning speed, interprets ballads at heartbreak tempos and creates dense soundscapes out of a simple repeated riff.

The leader blends contemporary concerns with a rich seam of historical references, his spiky lines and impressionist touch completely at one with Donald Edwards’ knowing beats and Eric Revis’ firm fingered bass.

Each track has a distinct character, the core trio interprets delicate vignettes and free-form blusters with equal conviction.

A second bass adds intrigue and texture on “African Song” and “Commitment”.
