Sites to see
British painter Frank Auerbach’s expressionist studies of the post-Blitz landscape are celebrated in London Building Sites, 1952-62 at the capital’s Courtauld Gallery. Incorporating pieces that helped to establish the young artist, the paintings are heavily layered and encrusted surfaces (up to an inch thick) through which Auerbach sought to capture images of earth and excavation at sites such as St Paul’s Cathedral and the John Lewis building on Oxford Street.
