Good bread has always been a cornerstone of Fergus Henderson’s St John restaurants. Since the bakery opened in 2010, head baker Justin Piers Gellatly has expanded the classic St John range beyond their robust sourdoughs and celebrated Eccles cakes to include breads, pastries and custard doughnuts. Brick House Artisan Sourdough Bakery
Founded by Real Bread Campaign members Fergus and Sharmin Jackson, Brick House specialises in slow-fermented San Francisco-style doughs, and this Sunday market stand sells out quickly of breads such as their famous Peckham Rye loaf. The bakery has supplied delis and restaurants across London, and collaborated with master chocolatier Paul A. Young on a bespoke sourdough crunch and dark chocolate bar. Sundays only.

Tucked away in the railway arches by London Fields station, the organic bakery E5 Bakehouse prides itself on sourcing ingredients from local suppliers. Popular breads are Hackney Wild pain de campagne, Route 66 (66 per cent rye) and Bordinsky (a 100 per cent rye sourdough). Buzzy and loud, E5 serves a range of delicate cakes, although those with an aversion to hipsters might find the Bakehouse grating. Daily, 7am-7pm.

Baker Frida Leijon and manager Jill Ågren opened this Shoreditch outpost of the Stockholm bakery Fabrique in late 2012 and already have a loyal following among London’s Scandinavian community. Stylish and serene, this bakery and café with its clean white tiles and perfectly crafted breads is a haven of Scandi cool in Hoxton. Its cinnamon buns are the best this side of the North Sea. Closed Monday.

Better Health Artisan Bakery
Producing breads and pastries according to Real Bread Campaign principles, Better Health is part of the local charity Centre For Better Health. It offers placements to adults with mental health issues who benefit from the therapeutic process of baking as well as acquiring a skill that can help get them a job. Available Tuesday to Saturday at the following outlet.
