Youngblood Hawke want us to thrill to the sound of surging drums and uplifting key changes, and to join in with chanted choruses of “Wake up, there’s a world outside your window!” No wonder the LA indie-rockers were picked to soundtrack a Coca-Cola ad campaign: they are almost insanely fizzy, like Arcade Fire after a forced course of serotonin injections. But the incessant cheerfulness is counterproductive: Wake Up made this listener want to draw the curtains and stay in bed listening to Joy Division.
