CUHK appoints HKUST finance professor as next dean

The Chinese University of Hong Kong has lured finance professor Kalok Chan from local rival HKUST to be the next dean of the CUHK business school. Prof Chan is currently acting dean at the HKUST business school - Wharton professor Jitendra Singh will take up the dean’s job there next month.

An undergraduate alumnus of CUHK, Prof Chan received his finance PhD from Ohio State University before going on to teach at Arizona State University. At HKUST he was head of the finance department for 10 years and was the founding director of the Master in Global Finance programme, taught jointly by HKUST and NYU Stern.

Prof Chan said he was excited to be rejoining his alma mater. “With the increasing demand for business education in this region, there are immense growth opportunities for the faculty,” he said. “I look forward to working closely with the faculty, staff, students, and alumni, to make CUHK an exciting place for creating and disseminating knowledge, and bringing positive changes to society.”

Prof Chan replaces TJ Wong, who stepped down from the dean’s job at CUHK in 2013.
