Alumni Event: Spain

The former Prime Minister of Italy and European Commissioner, Mario Monti, is delivering a conference for Iese Business School alumni at the school’s Barcelona campus. He will discuss the eurozone situation as well as the outlook for southern European countries and their future role within the EU. He will be accompanied by Ermenegildo Zegna, chief executive of Zegna Group and Jordi Canals, dean of Iese.

Learn about taxation

Paul Davies, a partner at PwC, returns to his alma mater, Aberystwyth University’s School of Management and Business in Wales, to deliver a lecture on tax, the media and global business. The lecture will consider current controversies about taxation and the social obligations of companies.

Get accredited

The US-based AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) is hosting a seminar on business accreditation. Victoria Licuanan, professor and former dean of Asian Institute of Management and Eileen Peacock, senior vice-president and chief officer of AACSB International in Asia will facilitate the seminar which ends on Wednesday 8 October.

Tuesday – October 8

Set up a sustainable business

Working in collaboration with ICAS, the leading professional body for chartered accountants in the UK and overseas, the University of Edinburgh Business School is hosting a discussion called ‘What is sustainable business?‘ Guest speakers include Kenneth Amaeshi, director of the school’s sustainable business initiative and Paul Wedlock, a financial controller at BSkyB who will talk about the broadcast media company’s view on sustainability within a highly competitive environment.

Copenhagen Business School in Denmark is also focusing on sustainability. It is running a seminar with four speakers sharing insights into why a business school should focus on this subject and how the future consumer behaves in a sustainable society.

Become more environmentally aware

The University of Washington Foster School of Business in the US is hosting an environmental innovation practicum where members of the public can find out about clean technology, renewable energy and climate capitalism. Industry experts speaking at the event include Aaron Fairchild, chief executive of Green Canopy Homes and Jeremy Smithson, founder of Puget Sound Solar.

Invest happily

Harvard Business School’s Michael Norton is giving a talk at Harvard College about how even a little money can buy a lot of happiness – but only if it is spent in the right way. The talk is based on his new book co-written with behavioural scientist Elizabeth Dunn, called Happy Money: The Science of Smarter Spending.

Alumni event: US

Alumni and guests of Stanford Graduate Business School are invited to a talk lead by Fred Hargett, chief finance officer at Novant Health. He will speak about healthcare reform and how Novant Health is preparing for future industry changes.

Thursday – October 10

Debate democracy

As part of their distinguished speakers programme, the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business has invited Dr Mamphela Ramphele, a community development activist, to speak at the school about the role South Africans should play within a constitutional democracy and in particular how business and education can contribute meaningfully to democracy. Detained without trial in the 1976 Soweto uprising, Dr Ramphele is now the leader of Agang SA, a party for all South Africans that is contesting the 2014 elections.

Friday – October 11

Join a roundtable

The Centre for Business Performance at Cranfield School of Management in the UK is hosting a roundtable to discuss the business intelligence approach for monitoring and surveillance systems in financial markets. Guests include Dr Mohamed Zaki, research associate at the University of Cambridge.
