Patrick Grant on eveningwear: tailoring tips from Savile Row
“Every man needs a midnight-blue three-piece evening suit, and either an alternative jacket or pair of trousers so that you can create different looks. A velvet smoking jacket, say, or an evening jacket in tartan or silk jacquard.
“Another alternative is tartan evening trousers. US Vogue’s international editor-at-large Hamish Bowles has a complete tartan evening suit that looks amazing.
“For a very formal occasion wear a black or dark midnight blue silk textured barathea or twill bow tie, not a flat satin one. If the event is less formal, you can wear a dark bow tie with a small pattern in it.
“Prince Charles, the Duke of Edinburgh and other smart dressers wear silk handkerchiefs, which shows élan. Silk handkerchiefs and bow ties make good gifts: have a simple white handkerchief embroidered with initials.
“Ideally, you ought to wear a patent lace-up shoe or a slipper, or, at the absolute minimum a highly polished closed-laced black leather shoe.
“For women, bags and jewellery are easier than clothes and I’m not a fan of long ballgowns. I’d steer clear of puff sleeves and taffeta but British designers such as Christopher Kane, Giles and Erdem do really beautifully crafted, almost couture-like dresses.”
