FT Foodies: Richard Hawley

Richard Hawley, musician

What food takes you back to your childhood?

Pomegranates – my grandmother used to slice them in half and give me a cocktail stick to pick the seeds. That kept me quiet.

What food, or taste, do you hate? I’m not fond of the taste of pineapple and I don’t like rare steak – I’m not a super-gore eater.

Which food or drink do you find most irresistible?

I love Guinness – I drink that by the gallon. Fagan’s pub in Sheffield is also wonderful. Tom, the landlord, does home-cooked fish and chips and a great Sunday dinner.

Who taught you the most about food and/or cooking?

On this story

IN Food & Drink

I lived on my own on the dole for many years; I got pretty good at making pasta and Italian food.

Where and when did you eat your most memorable meal?

The first meal I had when I came back from a nine-month tour [with Hawley’s previous band, Pulp] of America. My wife made me sausage and mash with Gentleman’s Relish. I burst into tears, because I was so glad to be home.

What is the most underrated food?

Turkish food, if it’s done properly. The word kebab is much maligned.

What is the first thing you eat or drink in the mornings?

Ginger beer with fresh limes and ice. It makes me really alert.

Is there anything you grow to eat?

I don’t, but my wife does – runner beans, courgettes, rocket, lettuce.

What would be your last meal?

Sausage and mash probably, at home with my wife.
