Kronos Quartet celebrated its 40th anniversary – nearly as old as ABBA – with this set of compositions from 14 different countries, string quartet as world music.
Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground” is all shivering pizzicato and bent notes; “Aha Gèdawo”, by Gétatchèw Mèkurya, winds sinuous and pentatonic; an old recording of Tqerry Riley’s “Cry Of A Lady” is bolstered by La Mystère Des Voix Bulgares.
