Beware of Mr Baker – DVD review

Ginger Baker created the sound of modern rock drumming – not to mention every crazy-drummer cliché

Jay Bulger, 2012

Artificial Eye

Not many documentaries begin with the film-maker smashed in the face by his subject but Ginger Baker is no ordinary subject and, luckily, newcomer Jay Bulger is equal to the task. With Cream, Blind Faith and many others, Baker single-handedly (or rather two-handedly) created the sound of modern rock drumming – not to mention every crazy-drummer cliché.

Archive footage captures his quicksilver talent, a blur of hair, sticks and teeth but supremely controlled, unlike his personal life. In Africa his unique style found its spiritual home and there he survives, still volatile, enraged, unrepentant.
