Saxophonist Argüelles came to prominence with the now legendary and soon to be re-formed 1980s UK big band Loose Tubes. This CD, his debut for the heavy-hitting Italian label Cam Jazz, channels that band’s maverick spirit into eight gripping originals that allow themes to develop and ideas to settle.
The rhythm section is beautifully balanced – pianist John Taylor, Dave Holland on bass and drummer Martin France are equally matched for strength and personality – and Argüelles is soulful, fluent and elegiac on both soprano and tenor saxophones.
