Disaster strikes Robert Redford’s solo yachtsman in the middle of the ocean. He has no power, dwindling rations and little chance of rescue. That’s about it; there’s one voiceover, one SOS call – but no dialogue, no histrionics. There’s no need: an unrelenting descent into death speaks for itself, interspersed with haunting underwater photography that emphasises the indifference of nature. Up-close with a stoic and understated Redford, there is no let-up in this terrifying exploration of the survival instinct.
