David Binney

Graylen Epicenter

(Mythology)

The fruity-toned alto saxophonist segues alt-rock into funky beats and ballads into jagged brass – and that’s just the title track. Jazz remains central, informing every phrase, lick and twisty theme.

Chris Potter and Ambrose Akinmusire complete the three-horn front line, pianist Craig Taborn is in the rhythm section and vocalist Gretchen Parlato adds to the ensemble warmth and harmonic depth.

“Terrorists and Movie Stars” rumbles menacingly, “Same Stare, Different Thought” is a dissonant fragment and “Home” a showcase of gathering intensity.
