The Labour party conference in Manchester starts in earnest on Monday with all eyes on Gordon Brown as he makes the most important speech of his career. The chancellor is expected to outline the political agenda which he hopes will secure his place as the next party leader. This will be Tony Blair’s last annual conference as Labour leader. He has yet to declare who he is backing as his successor.
