Hany Abu-Assad’s Omar is a terrorist drama from the Middle East front line. This filmmaker’s Paradise Now, memorable and unnerving, put us inside the heads of two suicide bombers. Omar, skilfully scripted, is less emotionally immersive: a shell game of betrayal and counter-betrayal set in the worlds of police informing and sectarian score-settling on either side of the Israel-Palestine divide. Adam Bakri, broody-handsome in the title role, has star presence; but a star presence may be what this kind of film, trading in shadow realities and shuffled identities, doesn’t quite need.
